  • Christmas Around the World

Putumayo gives the holiday season an international flavour with Christmas Around the World, a collection of familiar Christmas songs performed by artists from all over the globe. From a Cuban rendition of “Joy to the World” to a flamenco version of “White Christmas,” Christmas Around the World adds a unique twist to the classic carols that enliven the holidays.

In a world that is constantly changing, Christmas is a time for revisiting the familiar customs and rituals that connect everyone to generations past. While Christmas is celebrated in different ways around the world, among the unifying elements that help create holiday spirit are the songs, hymns, and carols that serve as the soundtrack for the season. And, though every country has its own unique songs, there are certain melodies that have crossed every border.

Most of the songs on Christmas Around the World will sound familiar, though a few are traditional melodies from a region or culture. All conjure up the Christmas spirit and add a special, international flavour to the holiday ambiance.

  • A Family Christmas

Few things evoke more holiday spirit than festive Christmas songs. On A Family Christmas, Putumayo offers a collection of yuletide favourites performed by a fascinating array of artists that every family is sure to enjoy whilst trimming the tree or sharing a Christmas meal.

Seattle-based Johnny Bregar delivers an acoustic rendition of the time-honoured “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” recorded especially for this album. Sleigh bells jingle in singer-songwriter Martin Sexton’s stripped down version of “Holly Jolly Christmas.” Incorporating quirky vocals with a jazzy flare, California-based Big Bad Voodoo Daddy adds his signature retro-swing style to the Louis Armstrong hit “Is Zat You Santa Claus?,” bringing to mind images of Santa stealthily delivering presents to an eager household. And Leon Redbone’s heartwarming interpretation of the holiday standard “Let It Snow” will keep you cozy on the coldest of Christmas nights.

A Family Christmas also features classic songs by country music star Deana Carter; The Christmas Jug Band featuring bluesy singer-songwriters Angela Strehli and Maria Muldaur; British folksinger Kate Rusby; bluegrass innovator Sam Bush; and one of America’s best-loved party bands, Brave Combo. New Orleans-based husband and wife duo Debbie Davis and Matt Perrine and fellow Crescent City musicians Lars Edegran and His Santa Claus Revelers with Big Al Carson round out this joyous collection.

  • Acoustic Brazil

The gentle rhythms of samba, bossa nova and more by legendary artists and fresh new voices. During carnival in Rio, the streets vibrate with the thunderous beats of the samba schools, their energetic rhythms persuading even the frail to dance. After the parties have ended, though, Brazilians start playing the softer, more introspective music for which they are also renowned. While upbeat rhythms like samba, forró and axé have people dancing in the streets during carnival, Acoustic Brazil focuses on the more delicate Brazilian music that comes to life in the aftermath of the party.

  • Acoustic Africa

Some of the continent’s premier singer-songwriters are featured on this truly unique and unplugged collection. Every so often, an album comes along that reminds us why we are so moved by song: the melody, the rhythm, and the message. Acoustic Africa is a captivating collection showcasing some of Africa’s greatest singer-songwriters in beautifully stripped down displays of acoustic mastery. These artists are helping to spearhead an acoustic revolution in stark contrast to the studio-based, synthesized dance music that became the standard for African pop-stars of the 1980’s and 90’s. On Acoustic Africa, you’ll discover gentle folk songs from Senegal, a protest song from South Africa, blues-tinged ballads from Mali and much more.

  • Italian Cafe

After the chaos and destruction of World War II and the conservative musical environment Italian leaders promoted, the Italian public was ready for a more relaxed sound. Jazz, swing and boogie-woogie were achieving worldwide popularity and, in Italy, merged with the Italian crooner tradition. The musical rebirth of the 1950s and ’60s was like a second liberation. What’s old is new and Putumayo’s Italian Café captures the music and attitude from that era and from current singers whose musical DNA follows that lineage.
