This item is made by Asha Handicrafts. Asha represents more than 6,500 artisans in 10 states of India. 'Asha' means 'hope' in Sanskrit. It aims to sustain the marketing ability of individual and family based artisans. It is a not-for-profit organisation which works to ensure that benefits of handicraft production reach the craftspeople themselves, by buying directly from the artisan groups and offering advance payments on orders.
Asha provides training and teaching facilities in tailoring and metal work, thereby establishing new local groups of craftsmen. It also provides educational assistance for children of the producers, medical check ups and treatment and savings programs for artisans and spouses.

These fairtrade magnets are supplied by World Arts & Crafts, one of the UK's first fairt trade importers. Now BAFTS-accredited, they work personally very closely with the artisans who make the products, visiting them at least twice a year and making advance payments of 50% to allow the craftsmen to buy raw materials and create a production cycle. This direct trading policy currently provides well-paid, regular work for around 200 families in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and South America. Child labour is never used, and every effort is made to use wood from sustainable sources. In addition, World Arts & Crafts contribute design ideas from their own expertise to help broaden the appeal of the products to the global market, and hence help develop the artisans' livelihoods.
