This item is made by The Mitra Bali Foundation, a non-governmental and non-profit organisation. It acts as a market and export facilitator for small craft producers who often live in the more remote areas of Bali. The foundation has a design centre where producers can access resources, work with designers and get regular training on new trends, technical aspects of production, health and safety and environmentally sustainable production.
Mitra Bali also has an environmental programme replanting Albesia (Blalu) trees. They ensure that their producers receive 50% of the total payment up front.

Our elephant dung paper products are handmade in Sri Lanka from 75% elephant dung and 25% recycled paper by Maximus Elephant Conservation Trust. The dung is collected and boiled to sterilise it and then it is ready for the paper-making process. Maximus has its workshop in the grounds of the Millennium Elephant Foundation, a wonderful small charity that cares for sick, old and disabled elephants. The foundation is also working hard to resolve the conflict between elephants and local communities, a critical concern as the elephants' natural habitat decreases and they turn to eating farmers' crops. Working with initiatives like Maximus, they are able to show the positive relationship local economies can have with these amazing animals - a simple example of this is that they pay villagers to collect the elephant dung which is used to make the paper. By buying this product you will help the foundation continue its incredible work.
